Nail Design

Everything you need to know about this local nail salon in one elegant package.

My Role:
UI Design, Website Deployment & Maintenance

Project Duration:
Oct 2018 - Jan 2019

A local nail design owned by my mother was in need of a new website to inform customers. Through interviews and feedback, I worked with my mother to bring her vision for this website to life.

The Client

Nail Design is a nail salon located in Carlsbad, CA. It is a small operation which is managed by my mother, Jenny Lam. As my client, she tasked me with designing a website for her business. To make my client's vision a reality, I interviewed her and received constant feedback throughout the design process.

Discovering My Client's Vision

Uncovering the vision my client had for the website began with an interview. My questions asked about what was absolutely necessary to be on the webpage and the type of feeling the website was to evoke in a visitor. My client made it a key point that the website needed to show that Nail Design is fun, friendly, and comfortable.

Sketches

To start the design process, I took a mobile-first approach by sketching how information would be laid out through the various pages. Those sketches were iterated upon until I was sure the design would work. After I was happy with the mobile version, I undertook the same process in designing the desktop version of the webpage.

Mockups and Prototype

Taking the mobile-first approach, I took to Adobe XD to turn my sketches into a high fidelity prototype. The colors and images I chose are meant to invoke feelings of fun, friendliness, and comfort. I received feedback from my client and iterated on the design accordingly. Once the mobile design was finalized, I developed a prototype of the desktop website and also finalized its design.

To the Web

Using Squarespace, I took the final design to the web. I adjusted an available template to match my design. The live website can be viewed in the link below.

Conclusion

This was my first real project. Prior to this, I had never touched any design software or website builder. Looking back, I would have definitely used a different website builder like Webflow or Wix to bring my design to the web. Squarespace was much more restrictive than I had originally anticipated. I am still maintaining the website, adjusting menu prices as my client needs. Overall, for my first project, I was very happy with how it turned out and would call it a success!
